The President of the Republic of Uganda Rtd. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa has officially unveiled and famously appointed his former Vice, and the once vice president of Uganda Prof. Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya as the direct and senior presidential advisor on Uganda’s sanitation and environment.

In the closure of Wednesday reports by the Presidential Press Unit (PPU).The news was disseminated via an announcement from the State House News Journal on Wednesday, the 28th of February, 2024.

Prof. Bukenya standing in his retirement age, will continue to be remembered to have been in service serving under Museveni’s government from May 23, 2003, until May 23, 2011 where he was sidelined by his master and commander in chief Y.K Museveni.

In the statement released; “The Presidential Press Unit (PPU) wishes to inform the general public that H.E. the President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. (Rtd.) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed H.E. Prof. Gilbert Bukenya as the Senior Presidential Advisor on Environment and Sanitation”.

The venerable statesman, at the age of 75, leaves behind a legacy marked by his unwavering service as the representative of Busiro North in parliament for nearly two decades, from 1996 until 2003. His pivotal role as the vice president, succeeding Specioza Wandera Kazibwe, further underscores his significant contributions to the nation’s political landscape.

In 2011, Bukenya contested the position of Secretary General of the NRM but was unsuccessful, ultimately losing to Amama Mbabazi.

He was suddenly in 2011 replaced and the former Bukoto East Legislature Hon. Kiwanuka Ssekandi became the new appointed vice president appointed by Museveni himself.

Mzee Meueveni’s trend of appointing former cabinet ministers as his advisors is becoming familiar. Among the seasoned advisors are ex-Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, who served as Prime Minister, and former ministers such as Amelia Kyambadde, Sarah Kanyike, and Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi.
