The Speaker of Parliament of the Republic of Uganda, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has asked the Inspector General of Police, Martins Okoth Ochola to promote the traffic officer who was manhandled by the military guards of Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza.

The soldiers manhandled Esther Namaganda on Sunday when she allegedly tried to stop Kyaligonza’s convoy from making a U-turn at a point where it is not allowed within Seeta Municipality in Mukono district.

The video footage and pictures of the incident that were taken by a UBC journalist who happened to be at the scene went viral and spread like wild fire on different social media channels on Sunday. This led to a backlash from the public against the soldiers who manhandled a fellow security officer.

As of now the two officers have been identified as Lance Corporal Peter Bushindiki and Private John Robert Okurut. The army has since locked up the duo for assault. The Defense Ministry Spokesperson, Brig. Richard Karemire tweeted an apology about the incident, saying the army has commenced in investigations. This afternoon, the speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, said she watched the video on the internet and saw what Namaganda went through while fulfilling her mandate, which is unacceptable. She asked the IGP to consider promoting Namaganda for sticking to her mandate.
