Moses Waiswa and Ruth Aturo crowned the best footballers of 2018

For the years of 2015, 16 & 17, FUFA in partnership with Airtel together with other companies have been crowning the best footballers of the year through the Airtel FUFA MVP Award, and so this year.

Friday evening of 7th December saw off the Airtel FUFA Awards 2018 that showed us the best footballers of the year during a colourful ceremony held at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

Vipers Sports Club and Uganda Cranes star midfielder Moses Waiswa was named the best male footballer of 2018 while Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Cardinals FC and Crested Cranes goalkeeper Ruth Aturo, was crowned the best female.

Waiswa beat two other contestants on the final short list that include KCCA FC youngstar Allan Okello who also fatures on the Uganda U-20 and U-23 teams and Onduparaka FCs Vianne Sekajugo while Aturo beat Crested Cranes captain and Kawempe Muslim midfielder Tracy Jones Akiror as well as Uganda Martyrs High school Lubaga defender Shadia Nankya.

The mesmerised Waiswa thanked FUFA for organising such good awards, revealing that he has worked hard for it all year round and he is ready for new challenges.

“I appreciate the effort of my teammates at Vipers and on the National team as well as the nominees and winners….. Now, it is the time to set new targets in my life. Coming from Sweden to return home has not been an easy decision, ” He added.

The Venoms midfield maestro guided his Kitende side to the 2017/18 Uganda Premier League success as well as finishing second in the Stanbic FUFA Uganda Cup. He has been a key member on the Uganda Cranes to secure a second successive slot at the TOTAL AFCON Finals in 2019 without concedeing a goal.

On the other side, Crested Cranes shot stopper Aturo represented Uganda during the CECAFA Women tournament held in Rwanda and the COSAFA championship in South Africa where Uganda was invited as a guest country.

She was named the best goalkeeper in both tourneys while domestically, Aturo’s performance between the posts inspired UCU LAdy Cardinals to their first major silverware when they clinched the FUFA Women cup.

The two walked back home each with a brand new car, Sh 1m prize money and Sh 500k that was given to them by Jackie Mwesigwa on behalf of Post Bank, another partners of the Airtel FUFAAwards 2018 to purchase fuel for their cars.
