The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) institution has condemned acts of violence by individual soldiers on civilians.

This follows the death of a civilian in Kaabong town who was killed by a UPDF soldier.

On Monday morning, Pte Ochan Tabu is reported to have shot dead a civilian, Mr Lochur Lowuta of Kalapata Sub-county – Kaabong, in an alleged response to a call from another civilian that the late was a notorious criminal who had now been cited.

However, the UPDF Deputy Spokesman, Maj Henry Obbo says the suspected has been arrested.

“The suspected killer and his accomplices have already been arrested and investigations into the case are underway,” said MajObbo.

In a statement released today, the UPDF Institution condemns acts of violence by individual soldiers to civilians and violation of rights of citizens and residents of Uganda.

“The UPDF institution believes in protection of people’s rights and highly values its good relationship with the civilian population, Any individual within its ranks who undermines this relationship, in anyway, is liable to punitive measures, as prescribed by the UPDF Act and any other laws in the Country,” reads the statement.

Maj Obbo has called on UPDF soldiers to remain committed to ensuring fulfillment of the Defence objective that guarantees continuation and strengthening of the Defense forces that has respect for Human Rights, and ensures the rule of law.

“We pray for the deceased’s soul to rest in eternal peace, and convey our sincere sympathies to the bereaved family,” he added.

He revealed that the army will do everything necessary to ensure Justice is delivered within the shortest possible time.
